{"id":1165,"date":"2014-02-22T21:00:16","date_gmt":"2014-02-23T02:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mymindfulwayoflife.com\/blog4\/?p=1165"},"modified":"2014-02-22T21:55:26","modified_gmt":"2014-02-23T02:55:26","slug":"carpe-diem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mymindfulwayoflife.com\/blog4\/carpe-diem\/","title":{"rendered":"Carpe Diem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mymindfulwayoflife.com\/blog4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/photo-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1172\" title=\"Carpe Diem, Mindfulness in Italy\" src=\"http:\/\/mymindfulwayoflife.com\/blog4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/photo-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Urszula Klich Mindfulness Meditation Atlanta psychologist\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mymindfulwayoflife.com\/blog4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/photo-2-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/mymindfulwayoflife.com\/blog4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/photo-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/mymindfulwayoflife.com\/blog4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/photo-2-400x300.jpg 400w, http:\/\/mymindfulwayoflife.com\/blog4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/photo-2.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Inherent in traveling are new people, new places, new foods, new spaces.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>Even our sense of time can become shaken.<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Somewhere across the Atlantic Ocean, though I haven\u2019t clue as to when or how, I was stripped of my old concept of time.\u00a0<!--more--><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Travel in this time vessel did not equip my being with automatic resetting.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>So, I was challenged to discover a new routine, one that I found myself stumbling into.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>This required a process of rebalancing, but without my usual set-points.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>There were uncertainties everywhere.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>Was I hungry, was I tired? Should I sleep, should I explore?\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>After missing a night\u2019s sleep on the flight abroad, my body felt like it could readily climb back in bed.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>In fact, there was a clear longing, not for any bed but <em><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">my<\/span><\/em> <em><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">bed<\/span><\/em>, a lingering concept of <em><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">my needs<\/span><\/em>. <span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>At the same time, the daylight was already signaling my brain to alter its pattern of creating sleep-inducing melatonin, and my cognitive mind nudged\u00a0me forward, against signs of physical depletion, prodding me to seize the day.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Carpe diem it is!\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>The whole situation meant honoring my observations as well as my goals\u2026a delicate process indeed. In doing so, I found myself naturally inclined to let go of expectations.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>Given the hectic state of my life before my trip, I had not planned a single thing I would do on this trip other than my hotel and my conference.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>Here I was visiting a place I may never see again, but I did not find myself feeling like I needed to create an itinerary, a list, or have any particular experience.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>Instead, I let each moment, each day, unfold as it did.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>I trusted it was doing so in exactly the way it was meant to.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>And I believe, as a result of that allowing, that I happened upon some simple, but amazing, experiences that I may not have had, if I had created and held onto a suitcase of plans and expectations.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps my fatigue slowed my brain, or maybe I was just in awe of all the newness.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>Regardless, the result was that I found myself truly, wondrously, living in the moment, which I realized I find more challenging to do at home, where my expectations are more ingrained.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>At home, I have developed many ideas of what should be and what I would like to do, accomplish, and be like.<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>Thoughts of getting more done, doing better, and being more efficient always seem to be lurking.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>The net effect is wanting more.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>It doesn\u2019t really matter what.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>Through my meditation, I\u2019ve come to learn thoughts are often about doing more, having more, being more.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>Surely, many of us can complete the sentence of what that \u201csomething\u201d more is.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I am reminded of Sharon Salzberg\u2019s reference to our human tendency to \u201clean forward.\u201d\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>In fact, I have, on more than one occasion, found myself chuckling inwardly at the image of our physical bodies tilted forward as we move through life.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>In truth, the \u201cdisease\u201d of leaning forward is not that funny.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: x-large;\">\u00a0<\/span>Physically, we tend to embody a forward posture with strained eyes and shoulder muscles, often hunching forward in front of our computers and while driving our cars.
