Toss them out and set an intention!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Of course it is important to have goals.\u00a0 Unfortunately, we rarely make use of them in a way that helps us achieve lasting change and affects the way we go about our life.\u00a0<!--more--> We have a tendency to set goals that are future-based.\u00a0 For example, we may say \u201cI am going to lose fifteen pounds by spring,\u201d or \u201cI am going to cook for my family every day.\u201d\u00a0 One problem with this approach is that we become focused on the end result.\u00a0 In turn, our ability to be flexible suffers. \u00a0For example, we may forbid ourselves from having a dessert but spend the whole evening eyeing the chocolate cake from the corner of our eye.\u00a0 Similarly, we may find ourselves yelling at the kids who are tired and hungry after we decide to\u00a0cook despite getting home late from a long day at work.\u00a0 When we approach our desired changes in this way, we may find ourselves miserable, and let\u2019s face it, unpleasant to be around, while we set our sights on this future imagined goal.<\/p>\n<p>Another problem with this approach is that we are still a failure if we lose ten pounds or manage to cook three times a week.\u00a0 Though in reality we have been successful at some change, we have indirectly invalidated ourselves to the extent that it is less likely we will keep up our progress. The message we leave with is that we set a goal, we tried, and we failed.<\/p>\n<p>Goals do have their place.
